Californian Bungalow Renovation, Middle Park

A transformative renovation and extension of a 1920s Californian bungalow, balancing heritage character with a light-filled contemporary addition.

In 2009, JMA undertook a transformative renovation and extension of a 1920s Californian bungalow, carefully balancing heritage character with contemporary living requirements. Working within extremely tight site constraints, including boundary-to-boundary construction and the integration of an existing swimming pool, the project required precise planning, disciplined sequencing and a highly coordinated build approach.

A substantial portion of the rear of the original dwelling was removed to make way for a new architectural intervention, including a carefully considered second-storey addition. Designed by Coy Yiontis Architects, the new works introduced a light-filled, modern living environment that sits comfortably alongside the retained heritage fabric, ensuring the original street presence of the home remained intact.

The result is a seamless transition between old and new—an inner suburban classic reimagined for contemporary family life. Through considered detailing, robust construction and architectural sensitivity, the project has delivered a durable, functional and refined home designed to serve its occupants for decades to come.
